Gloomy sunday is a song composed by Hungarian pianist and composer Rezső Seress and published in 1933, as "Vége a világnak" ("End of the world"). Lyrics were written by László Jávor, and in his version the song was retitled "Szomorú vasárnap" ( Sad Sunday). This song was described as Suicide Song because many people committed suicide with this song playing.
Starting with the man in Berlin, after listening to the song he complained to friends that he was haunted by its melody and lyrics. He fell into a state of depression that could not escape. Finally he used a gun to shoot himself. After that, a few days later, also in Berlin, a hanged girl was found and under her feet was Szomoru Vasarnap. Press began to spread about this phenomenon, and a row of similar cases occurred in many parts of the world such as Hungary, France, USA. Seress himself got shocked and did not believe in this. However, when the statistics stated that there were hundreds of suicides around the world related to Seress's song, he began to really panic. He then tried to withdraw this song but failed. After this, Seress himself committed suicide in 1968.
The psychologists said that the phenomenon of suicide at that time was due to the social context ( Aftermatch of World War I) what had powerful and negative impacts on human psychology and the song itself, as well as the death of the author is only its consequences.
In fact, after World War II, it couldn't be seen any suicide because of this song.
